Welcome to El Compas

Tango is built on connection, but finding the right people, events, and communities is still often harder than it should be.

That is why we created El Compas: a community app for social tango dancers, designed to help people connect around the thing that actually brings us together — dancing.

El Compas is not a dating app, and it is not another social network built around followers, popularity, or endless scrolling. It is a practical tool for helping dancers find each other, make plans, join events, and become part of the local tango community.

Find a partner for the dance you actually want to do

At the centre of El Compas is a simple idea:

Sometimes you are not looking for a person. You are looking for someone to dance with at a specific class, practica, milonga, marathon, or festival.

With El Compas, you can create a partner request describing what you are looking for: the activity, date, dance role, level and other useful details.

Other dancers in that city can find the request and message you directly from it.

Instead of posting into a large WhatsApp group and hoping the right person sees it, the request stays structured, searchable and connected to the conversation.

Once you have found someone, you simply mark it as fulfilled.

Built for tango communities, not dating

This distinction matters to us.

Many apps that connect people eventually become focused on matching, popularity and attention. El Compas is deliberately designed differently.

There are no swipe queues, compatibility scores, popularity rankings or ratings of dancers. We do not want people reduced to scores or profiles competing for attention.

The question El Compas is trying to answer is much simpler:

Who wants to dance?

That could mean finding a partner for Tuesday's class, meeting dancers while visiting another city, joining a marathon community, or simply getting in touch with someone attending the same event.

Discover dancers without exposing where people are

Location is useful in tango. Precise personal location usually is not.

El Compas is therefore built around cities rather than person-to-person distance.

You can discover dancers and activity around Berlin, Paris, Prague or another tango city without broadcasting exactly where somebody is.

We have tried to make privacy part of the structure of El Compas rather than something hidden inside a settings page.

Profile information can also have different visibility levels, and blocking is designed so that people can quietly remove unwanted contact without revealing that they have blocked someone.

A space for tango events

El Compas is also being built for organizers.

Events can have their own community space where dancers can see participants, find people looking for partners, follow announcements and discuss what is happening during the event.

For organizers, the aim is to reduce the need to spread information across several WhatsApp groups, Facebook posts, spreadsheets and other tools.

For dancers, it means arriving at an event with a much clearer idea of who is there and what is happening.

Built for travelling dancers

Tango is unusually international.

A dancer might be at home in Berlin this week, spend the weekend at a marathon in Belgium, and visit Buenos Aires a few months later.

El Compas is being designed around that reality.

You can use your home city as your base while also connecting with the communities and events you are travelling to.

The goal is not just to help people discover tango somewhere new, but to make it easier to actually become part of the community when they arrive.

We are still at the beginning

El Compas is a young project, and we are building it together with dancers and organizers who actually use it.

That means some communities will initially be small. Some cities will grow faster than others. And many parts of the product will continue to change as we learn what is genuinely useful.

We would much rather build something that solves real problems in tango than fill the app with features simply because other social platforms have them.

So if something feels confusing, something is missing, or you have an idea that would make El Compas more useful, we want to hear it.

A community platform only becomes useful when there is a community inside it.

We hope El Compas can become a small piece of infrastructure for tango communities around the world: helping more people find the right dance, the right event, and the people who make tango worth travelling for.
